WeaveVM x Humanode: Faster Network Sync Through Permanent Storage

WeaveVM x Humanode: Faster Network Sync Through Permanent Storage

December 02, 2024

Humanode, a pioneering blockchain network with over a thousand active nodes, is integrating with WeaveVM to revolutionize how its historical ledger data is stored and accessed. While Humanode specializes in biometric identity verification and has one of the largest validator networks in the space, its current system requires validators to sync around 100GB of data through peer-to-peer connections – a process that can take upwards of 10 hours.

The Challenge

Humanode’s expansive network of over 1,000 validators currently faces significant hurdles in data synchronization, with new nodes spending 10+ hours downloading the full 100GB+ ledger through peer-to-peer connections.

The Solution

WeaveVM will serve as a decentralized archival layer for Humanode’s ledger, streaming block data to Arweave’s permanent storage network. This integration makes Humanode’s historical data immutable and universally accessible through high-performance gateways, rather than relying solely on peer-to-peer distribution.

Humanode validators can use the wvm:// protocol to sync from genesis using a freely-auditable pool of data signed by WeaveVM.

What Does This Mean for Humanode?

For Validators

  • Drastically reduced synchronization times for new network participants
  • Trustless access to historical chain data
  • Simplified onboarding process for non-technical validators

For the Network

  • Enhanced data redundancy through permanent storage
  • Improved network resilience with decentralized data access
  • Cost-efficient storage through data compression and optimization

Technical Implementation

The integration leverages WeaveVM’s ExEx pipeline to:

  • Archive Humanode’s Substrate blocks in real-time
  • Compress and serialize data for efficient storage
  • Provide fast retrieval through the WVM protocol
  • Enable streamlined validator synchronization

This collaboration exemplifies how specialized blockchain infrastructure can complement and enhance existing networks. By combining Humanode’s thousand-node network with WeaveVM’s permanent storage layer, both teams are working to make blockchain data more accessible and durable — effective networks need both strong consensus mechanisms and reliable data availability solutions.
